‘Saving The House That Jeff Built’ takes young readers on an exciting adventure through the forests and wetlands along the beautiful Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in southern Ontario, Canada. This book follows the story of ‘Jeff’, the elusive and endangered Jefferson Salamander, as he courageously makes his spring journey to his precious nesting sites in search of a mate – all the while wary of the potential perils that lie ahead and the dangerous conditions he must navigate. His route is a familiar one and leads him to the fragile, special ponds that are the critical habitat for this treasured amphibian.

The easy-to-read full colour pages bring life to ‘Jeff’s’ travels as he emerges in early spring to greet the new season. Climbing moss-covered boulders, he follows the ancient trails where he and his mate hope to find quiet, still ponds to lay their eggs and create another new generation of special little salamanders.

A must-read storybook created to encourage our youths of today and tomorrow to become part of the important movement for a better and sustainable Wild Canada.

About the author/artist:

Sherry Hayes, having spent her youth surrounded by wetland forests teeming with wildlife, has a lifelong passion for what she fondly refers to as – ‘All Things Nature’.

Witnessing the downward spiral of Canada’s wild spaces and its precious inhabitants has compelled this artist to become a voice for vulnerable at-risk species and spaces within this country.

‘Saving The House That Jeff Built’ is Book One in a series of children’s books designed to help our youth understand the importance of all species on earth. ‘Within The Darkened Forest’ (shown here) is one of this author’s ‘Darkness’ series paintings and is the inspiration behind this important story about ‘Jeff’.
